Kailasanathar Temple

                           This temple was built by the Pallava king Narashimhavarman -2 (700-728 CE). The whole temple complex is built out of sandstone. But for the load-bearing course of Adhisthana, I.e. Patrika, which is of granite. On plan, the temple consist of the garbhagriha aradhamandapa, and a shine built by Mahedravarman, all facing east side.   The sanctum has thesomaskanda panel in addition to the polished Dhara kinda which is a characteristics feature of all  pallava temples. The prakara wall has 58 small shrines attached to the inner surface of the wall.  Small shine There is on their series of seven attached to the outer surface of the prakara wall.

Lord cornwalls captured the fortified city in 1791AD., But handed it back to Tipu sultan a year later as per the Srirangapatta a treaty.


The original fort was oval in plan, with sound bastions and huge gateways at important places Delhi bagilu (gate) and Yelahanka bagilu in the north, Ulsur bagilu in East, Kanakanahalli bagilu and Mysore bagilu in the south and Kangeri bagilu in the west.


Remnats of these are still in existance. It was surrounded by a dry moat.


Only this part of fort now remain intact, consists of a dungeon and a small Ganesh temple.


The three successive gateways here, linked the royal encloser to the civilian area. The granite walls are sloping with beautiful stucco carving.
